Lacey swings her feet back and forth where she’s perched on the tailgate of the truck; hands braced either side of her silky-smooth thighs. The girl’s patiently waited for me to settle Major in for the night, watching my every move with an amused kind of fascination. Having her so focused on me, and only me? Yeah—it makes me hot.

I toss Major’s brush into the float and then step across to where she sits. Her cheeky gaze follows me, the tilt of her lips hinting at thoughts that match my own.

“What you smiling about, huh?”

She shrugs. “Nothing you need to know.”

I lift my hat off and drop it on her head. Fuck, that’s hot. For a born and raised city girl, she makes a pretty fucking sweet country gal too.

“Let me freshen up, and then we’ll go find the others.” I’ve got dust in my hair, and the shirt on my back is soaked with sweat.

“Sure.” She grins, adjusting the hat to seat better over her pigtails.

I need to cool down—fast. Lacey’s hands slow their fussing as I work my way down the buttons, then shake the cotton off my back. Snatching up a jug of water tucked in the shade of the truck, I bend at the waist and tip some over my head to wash out my dirty hair. The droplets run down my spine; my bare shoulders wet from the overflow.

I stand and shake myself off like a damn dog, spraying water all over Lacey. She lifts both hands and one knee, curling away from the spray while she giggles uncontrollably. It’s so damn good to hear her happy.

“Tuck! Stop it.”

“Thought you might need to cool off, too.”

“Oh my, God. Not like that.”

She still giggles a little when I settle myself between her legs, placing a hand either side of her hips. “How do you think I did in there, then, huh? You think I won over the judges?”

“Without a doubt. You looked really good.” Her eyelids are heavy, her lips slightly parted as she glances at my mouth.

“I asked what you thought of my routine, baby, not me.”

A cute blush rushes into her cheeks. “Can’t fault me for admiring both.”

Her breath feathers over me as she speaks. “I suppose not.” All I need to do is lean forward a little more.

She beats me to it.

Hands braced over top of mine, Lacey closes the gap between us and gently tugs my bottom lip between hers. She takes the time to taste it before releasing the flesh, her measured breaths heavy and slow.

I jerk my hands free and place them on her butt, scooting her to the edge of the tailgate and tight against me. My mouth connects with hers; my hat knocked off when both of us tilt our head to deepen the contact.

She tastes sweet, like the candy flavoured slushies they sell out front, and on a hot day like today, I can’t get enough. Her breaths quicken, and I groan at the sound of her rushed need for oxygen.
